Over the years, pigs have been susceptible to other coronaviruses, some more widespread than others. Through research and testing, findings point toward coronavirus antibodies as vital for eliminating the virus. Just take the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) that rocked the swine industry in 2013 and 2014, for example. By controlling exposure in their herds, farmers were able to document which pigs contracted the disease and which remained asymptomatic. They then harnessed the protective antibodies to spread immunity throughout the herd. The science of antibodies is extremely promising and could very well be vital to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic that humans are currently facing.
